Is healthy low-fat, low-calorie food-stuff? Is healthy diet sodas and lettuce wrapped burgers without the bun? Is healthy a thick shake out of a can in the morning? If you listen to the main stream media, the answer is YES! All of these things are healthy, good for you, to be encouraged and trusted.
The more I learn about our food system and what we are told is healthy, the more I see it for the lies it is. We as consumers trust that if it is packaged and sold to us as food, then it has to be good for us on some level. But that's not true.

Healthy is learning for yourself what you're eating. Where did it come from and how was it made. Healthy is eating as close to nature as possible. What I mean is if you can look at it and know where it came from (a tree, the ground, a baker's oven - or your oven!) then most likely it is good fuel for your body. If you look at it and it isn't found anywhere in nature, it likely isn't great for you.
We all have very busy lives and "food" companies love to prey on our need for convenience. Starting today I'm challenging that myth that food has to be easy and unhealthy to be convenient. I'm going to prepare and blog about fast, inexpensive and simple meals that ANYONE can make to avoid things like soda, fast food and "convenience" foods.
Phase 1: What are you drinking?
Are you aware that Ocean Spray is giving money to stop prop 37, the proposition to label all foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO.) How about Pepsi, Nestle, Coca-Cola, Hormel, Kellogs, Smuckers, McCormick, General Mills... I'm not at all surprised by this list since high fructose corn syrup (HFC made from GMO corn) and other sweeteners rank high on their products ingredient list. Sadly, HFC is damaging to your health. They want to keep you, the consumer, as ignorant as possible.
So what should you drink instead? How about...
WATER!!! Rather than spending a fortune on those little plastic bottles, invest in a filtration system. I like my Brita water pitcher because I like keeping cold water in the fridge (and no, I'm not getting a kickback for saying that... unlike Biggest Loser.) If you HAVE to have flavor in your drink, you can make your own juice with a juicer. I got my machine used off eBay and its served me well for years and years.
You can also get an inexpensive hand juicer like this one.
The juicing options are endless. To flavor your water you can keep organic berries in the freezer and toss them into your water. If you simply MUST have a carbonated beverage, you could invest in a soda machine like the Soda Stream.

The only limits are your budget and imagination! Of course, having a pretty glass or bottle to keep your beverage of choice in is also important (at least to me.) My latest addiction are these glass water bottles with a silicone sleeve by BKR. They just seem to be the perfect size for me, and I love all the colors!

Personally I think any one of these is a lot more fun that grabbing that can of soda. If you just HAVE to have a soda, pick one that uses natural cane sugar, like Hansens or even better, Blue Sky organic soda. And then there's always iced tea (ideally made from your own garden herbs and flowers!)
What do you think? Do you think you could permanently live without conventional soda? Would you be willing to at least give it a try? Need more convincing? Check out these great articles:
